The natural place to live

Jewel in the hills

Moffat is a small and attractive town nestling in the unspoiled scenery of the upper Annandale Valley.

The town has a large number of visitors who enjoy the scenery in this area of beautiful countryside. The majority of Moffat is itself recognized as an outstanding conservation area.

Moffat was once a well-known spa town - one of only two in Scotland - and it still retains the aura of its leisured past. The former baths and pump room now house the Town Hall.

The local area

In the surrounding area there are numerous walks, including the Southern Uplands Way, for dedicated walkers. The town hosts a walking festival, featuring guided hill walks.

North-east of Moffat on the A708 is Scotland's highest waterfall, The Grey Mares Tail, and the famous 'Tibbie Shiels Inn', at the foot of St. Mary's Loch. North-west up the A701 is the Devil's Beeftub, an impressive natural cauldron cut out of the hills, where border thieves used to hide their stolen cattle.

A lively community

The town is extremely popular for walking, shooting, fishing and golf; with Moffat Golf Club welcoming visitors to its 18-hole hilltop heathland course.

In addition Moffat enjoys a healthy drama scene and is the location for the 'Old Well Theatre', which hosts a busy calendar of events.

A stress-free haven

More and more people are choosing Moffat as a peaceful base away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The primary and secondary schools are highly regarded and with its location close to the M74, Moffat is within commuting distance of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Carlisle.
